Dear Mr McEwen,
The European Union has recognised the cruelty of battery cages. These small, bare cages will be illegal in member states after 2012. Switzerland banned battery cages over a decade ago.
Battery cages don't allow anything like adequate exercise and prevent most of the hen's natural behaviour. Battery hens develop osteoporosis from lack of exercise, and many have broken bones when they are taken from cages. Such a system is cruel and must stop.
Please don't let Australia lag behind in animal welfare - ban the battery cage.
