The Hon Peter McGauran
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600

Dear Mr McGauran,

It concerns me greatly that Australian sheep, and to a lesser extent cattle and goats, are still suffering the stress of export overseas.

Tragedies, such as the Uniceb fire where 67,000 sheep burned or drowned, highlight the cruelty of the trade. Since then cattle have drowned on the Guernsey Express, suffocated on on Temburong and died in large numbers on the Anomis and the Charolais Express.

The thousands of dead sheep on the Cormo express last year are just the latest in the continuing saga of cruelty in this trade.

However, even under "normal" circumstances up to 150,000 sheep a year die by the end of the voyage. More die in Middle Eastern feedlots.

This level of death and suffering is quite unacceptable. I most strongly urge you to do more to expand the carcass trade and to stop live export.

Yours sincerely
