Health in Cuba

A recent article in the prestigious Science journal drew attention to the good performance of Cuba on health and longevity. Despite being a poor country fighting various US imposed trade embargos, the country has a life expectancy in line with that of the US. Naturally, the authors of the article neglected to mention food in Cuba. As life expectancy has risen in the last 3 decades from its developing country levels of the 1960s, there has been a decline in animal product consumption ... animal products provided 25% of calories in Cuba in 1980 (FAO statistics) and this had dropped to under 10% by 2005. You don't need high tech medicine when people don't eat the foods which make them sick.
